"Steppin' Out" barbershop quartet
Steppin' Out is a barbershop quartet located in Salt Lake City, Utah. Steppin' Out was organized in January of 2006 with a goal of keeping the tradition of pure barbershop alive while at the same time providing first class entertainment. This quartet finished among the top five quartets at both the 2007 and 2008 Barbershop Harmony Society's Rocky Mountain District quartet competitions. Listen to part of our contest performance.
The quartet consists of Dave Thorell (lead), Lon Szymanski (bass), Tom Roberts (baritone) and Kim Gilbertsen (tenor).
A highly experienced quartet, its members have a total of 89 years of barbershop service. The quartet boasts within its ranks two Rocky Mountain District quartet gold medal winners (who each have also won an International Seniors Quartet bronze medal) and one International chorus silver medalist. All the members of the quartet are also members of the Saltaires Show Chorus, an internationally acclaimed barbershop harmony chorus located in Salt Lake City.
Dave Thorell is a Rocky Mountain District gold medal champion, singing with the quartet, “Tempo Squires”. He also has won a Barbershop Harmony Society International bronze medal in Senior competition with the quartet, “Senior Class Reunion”. Dave’s a building contractor by trade. He’s been a barbershopper for 40 years.
Lon Szymanski is also a Rocky Mountain District gold medal champion singing with the quartet, “Spellbound”. He won a Society International bronze medal in Senior competition with the quartet, “Senior Class Reunion”. Lon’s a drywall contractor by trade. He’s been a barbershopper for 19 years.
Tom Roberts is a part-time musician, having played with the classic rock band, “Class Reunion”. He has also sung baritone in four barbershop quartets. Professionally, he’s been a practicing attorney for over 30 years, with his Roberts Law Office located in Salt Lake City and Park City, Utah. He’s been a barbershopper for 9 years.
Kim Gilbertsen, originally from Chicago, was a musical prodigy at a very early age. His 21 years of barbershop experience includes singing tenor in numerous successful quartets, acquiring an International silver medal as a member of The New Tradition Chorus, and currently holding the position of Assistant Director of the Saltaires Show Chorus.
Steppin' Out has a varied and extensive repertoire that includes:

- partiotic music
Steppin' Out was privileged to sing our national anthem at this season's Utah Jazz home opener; and has performed at BYU, at private parties, including numerous Christmas and Birthday parties, at Barbershop Harmony Society Chapter shows, such as for the Wasatch Front, Utah Valley, and Burley, Idaho Chapters; and at many other events.
