COMMENTARY ON THE
GOSPEL ACCORDING TO SAINT THOMAS
Logion 47

47. Jesus said, "It is not possible that a man mount two horses or that he shoot two bows, and it is not possible that a servant serve two masters: otherwise, he will honour the one and treat the other contemptuously. No man drinketh old wine and straightway desireth to drink new wine. And new wine is not put into old wineskins, lest they burst; nor is old wine put into a new winskin, lest it spoil it. An old patch is not sewn onto a new garment, because a tear would result." Mt 6:24 (Cf. Lk 16:13)
"No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Mk 2:21,22 (Cf. Lk 5:36-38)
"No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles."

Lk 5:39
"No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, `The old is better.'"
