Logion 28

28. Jesus said, “I took my place in the midst of the world, and I appeared unto them in the flesh, and found them all drunken, and none found I thirsty among them, and my soul was afflicted for the sons of men, because they are blind in their hearts and they see not that they came into the world empty, and that they seek also to leave the world empty. But now they are drunken; when they shake off their wine, then will they repent.”
Cf. Jo 17:6-26 for a vaguely parallel thought; also the complaint in Mk 9:19.

When the soul of Jesus came among men, He saw clearly that they had lost all sensitivity to the things of the spirit. In order to repent we must shake off our worldly nature and its distractions and become aware of our eternal nature. It is only the virtues that the spirit of man accumulates that will go with him when he leaves this world. Seeking to accumulate anything else is as misguided as the actions of a drunkard.
