33The separation of this sentence by the translator seems a little unfortunate. I believe the meaning is that there was no definite character in the souls, not in the women. The idea is perhaps that although the soul would impart a tabula rasa quality to the mind it enightens, that the life chosen would imprint the soul through the mind, in the end making it different. This seems to be the force of the paragraph that follows.
