Whenever we write a phoneme, we place its symbol between two forward slashes [ / ]. Standard phonetic practice is to use an IPA symbol nearest its most common pronunciation. This would require a font not available on this website and using graphics is quite awkward. For this reason we use a few non-standard symbols to represent some of these sounds.
