5 Sentence syntax and paraphrase


Chapter 4 contained a bare introduction into the syntactic classes involved in the structure of the sentence: declarative, interrogative, or imperative. Here we pick up that thread and continue with deeper analysis of the order of its component lexicological and phrasal elements. The reader will find a formal description of and justification for some of the most important PS-rules involved. The use of paraphrase in the analysis will be illustrated and some of its advantages and pitfalls pointed out.
