the verb do which must substitute for a verb when there is no modal (nor be nor have) and when either the sentence is an interrogative, it is emphatic, or it is negative, ¶17-4-3, ¶17-4-4, & ¶17-4-5; the p. v. also appears when the whole predicate must be referred to anaphorically, cf., ¶10-4-4
