a verb which like the copula structures with a subject complement, ¶8-4-3. In this work the status of the l. v. as a category distinct from the copula is open, cf., ¶10-4-2. Many subject complements may be derived as the remains of clauses and infinitive phrases that may normally complement such verbs.
