a part of speech prototypically forming an adjunct to the verb and serving as a situation descriptor, §8-5; an a. is not only a modifier of a verb, but as a graduator may modify an adjective or other adverb, ¶2-6-7; an a. is often homologous to an adjective or (adverbial) noun or may be formed from these by adding the suffix –ly; the a. usually designates the position, distance, direction, point of time, duration direction in time, frequency, degree, or manner of a state, action or event, cf. also ¶15-3-7
