The John lineage traces back from Ohio to Pennsylvania in its early settlement period. The immigrant from was from Haverford West (Pembroke) and carried the surname of Phillips. The Phillips pedigree goes back to include a knight who participated in the first crusade, which story survived in the John family. There are a number of illegitimate branches in the later generations of the Philips family. How John is connected has not yet been worked out.
