{20} Stevens Lineage

The Stevens lineage traces back through Ontario to Vermont and Massachusetts. The earlier members of this line were native of England.

At this point we give two versions of a conjectural connection to English Quakers. One principal difficulty has been in understanding the naming pattern among the children in the family of [9] Roger. Version A makes [10] Roger aged 19 at marriage, not a very likely occurrence and difficult to accept without more evidence however slim. Version B makes [9] Roger aged 43 at marriage, not a very usual occurrence and begging for additional evidence. Looking for such evidence we may observe that this would make a death in 1741 (ae 74) come from causes incident to age. Moreover, the marriage of [10] Roger in 1686 occurred in a time and place where it was most appropriate to have it recorded in county records. This suggests strongly the marriage of a more mature couple. Many of the details given in the biography of [8] Roger are themselves not without their own set of contradictions and difficulties.
